This fern grows one to three feet tall. The leaves are dark green with a distinctive scaly mid-rib. It is semi-evergreen with some green leaves remaining throughout the winter.

     It grows best in semi-shade in a moist soil high in organic matter. The root should be planted about two inches below the surface.
